A writing desk designed by Bas van Pelt for My Home in the Netherlands during the 1930s. The desk is executed in ash wood with contrasting mahogany handles and combines elements of Dutch modernism with a restrained Art Deco influence.

The desk was designed to be used from both sides. One side has three drawers, while the opposite side has two drawers, making it suitable as a freestanding piece in a room. The partially solid ash top has a wide rounded edge, repeated in the feet and other details of the construction. Vertical openings in the side panels and the horizontal stretcher give the otherwise straightforward construction a distinctive character.

Bas van Pelt (1900–1945) was a Dutch furniture designer and interior architect who played an important role in the development of modern interiors in the Netherlands. In 1931, he took over My Home Woninginrichting in The Hague, where he presented his own furniture designs alongside work by other modern designers. His practice covered furniture, interiors and complete interior schemes, with designs ranging from wooden furniture to tubular-steel pieces. His interiors were based on creating a coherent atmosphere rather than allowing individual pieces to dominate, reflecting his belief in functional and personal living spaces.

    Condition
The desk has been carefully restored, with particular attention given to the finish and construction while preserving the character of the original solid oak. It functions properly, with all drawers opening and closing smoothly. The desk shows some minor signs of age and use, consistent with its history and dating from the 1930s. Minor traces of the sanding prcedure remain visible.

We have consciously chosen to photograph all of our items in their current state to present the real original condition as completely as possible for transparency towards our clients.

In case you have any additional questions about the original condition, always feel free to reach out and ask us for additional images. We do also offer services such as restoration and re-upholstery in case this is wished for.
