The Model 168 lounge chair, designed by Kurt Østervig in 1960, is often referred to as a “hunting chair.” Built from solid oak with original cognac leather, the chair uses leather panels for both seat and backrest, fastened to the frame with buckles. This method of construction suspends the leather within the wooden structure, emphasizing material honesty and functional design. The wide, flat armrests became a defining feature, distinguishing Model 168 from other Danish lounge chairs of the period. Today, the chair remains a collectible example of Østervig’s exploration of oak and leather in modern furniture.

Kurt Østervig (1912–1986) was a Danish furniture designer trained as a shipbuilder before moving into furniture design. After working with E. Knudsen, he founded his own studio in the late 1940s and collaborated with leading Danish manufacturers. Østervig’s work spanned lounge chairs, tables, and storage furniture, often combining oak, teak, and leather in clear, functional forms. His designs were exhibited internationally, including at the Milan Triennale, and are represented in museum collections. Though less widely known than some contemporaries, Østervig is recognized among collectors and interior professionals for designs like the Model 168, which continue to circulate in today’s market.

    Condition
The oak wooden frame shows signs of age and use and is overall in good vintage condition. The cognac leather shows age related patina and remains in great condition. Frames have been restored and conditioned with an oil finish, leather has been cleaned and waxed with a beeswax

We have consciously chosen to photograph all of our items in their current state to present the real original condition as completely as possible for transparency towards our clients.

In case you have any additional questions about the original condition, always feel free to reach out and ask us for additional images. We do also offer services such as restoration and re-upholstery in case this is wished for.
