A pair of chests of drawers dating from the 1980s/1990s, executed in original cognac leather with a naturally patinated surface. The drawers are fitted with matching cognac leather handles, each finished with cognac leather buttons and visible stitching that adds a considered detail to the design. The leather covers the exterior of the chests, giving the pieces a consistent material character throughout. Their simple forms and restrained detailing reflect the material-focused approach found in Scandinavian furniture of the period.

Cognac leather was widely used in furniture for its durability and ability to develop a natural patina over time. Combined with the simple forms associated with Danish design, leather introduced warmth and texture while maintaining a clean, functional aesthetic. The original leather and its natural ageing give this pair a strong connection to the period in which they were produced.

The chests also show a clear visual affinity with the work of French designer Jacques Adnet, whose furniture is particularly recognised for its sophisticated use of leather as both a structural and decorative material. Adnet frequently combined clean, architectural forms with richly coloured leather, often emphasising the material through visible stitching and carefully considered details. While these chests are Danish and date from a later period, their use of cognac leather, restrained geometry and stitched leather handles recalls the material language associated with Adnet’s designs.

Condition

The chest of drawers are in good vintage condition showing signs of age and use. The original cognac leather is patinated and the structure has been checked. One chest of drawers has a larger sign of use on the right side. Minor spots visible on the top.
