This early and rare large cabinet, designed by Aldo Tura in Italy during the late 1930s, is made from eggshell, rosewood, glass, and brass.
The drawers and doors are covered with eggshell inlay, a traditional Japanese technique that was uncommon in Italy during the 1930s and 1940s due to its complexity and time-consuming process. Tura’s use of eggshell inlay during this period was rare, as the technique was not widely recognized by Italian clients.
This cabinet highlights his dedication to craftsmanship and innovation. The structure consists of two sections: a lower portion with multiple drawers and an upper storage compartment. The drawers are arranged symmetrically, each featuring a horizontal handle and a locking mechanism. The upper section has two doors that open to reveal a mirrored interior with glass shelves for storage or display. The cabinet stands on cylindrical feet, elevating it from the floor. The eggshell finish contrasts with the rosewood frame, creating a visual distinction between materials. The design balances functionality with material craftsmanship, offering both closed storage and open display options. The combination of structured compartments and refined detailing reflects Tura’s approach to furniture making, emphasizing both practical use and distinctive material application.

We also have a matching side table and a secretaire in stock.

Aldo Tura (1909–1963) was an Italian furniture designer known for his luxurious and highly distinctive pieces that blended Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, and traditional craftsmanship. He established his design studio near Milan in the 1930s, quickly gaining recognition for his meticulous attention to detail and innovative use of materials.

Tura was particularly renowned for his use of rare and exotic materials, such as parchment, goatskin, and lacquered wood, often incorporating high-gloss finishes and rich, deep colors. One of his most intriguing techniques was the application of Japanese eggshell inlay, a method that involved carefully arranging and embedding crushed eggshells into lacquered surfaces to create intricate, textured patterns. His designs often featured sculptural, curvilinear forms, evoking a sense of opulence and craftsmanship that set them apart from mass-produced furniture of the time.

Tura’s work remains highly collectible, celebrated for its fusion of traditional artisanal methods with bold, modern aesthetics.

    Condition
The eggshell has been professionally restored with eye for age and detail. The finish of the cabinet has been redone, leaving a few signs of age visible. The interior has been left in original condition which is greatly conserved. This can be restored upon request.

We have consciously chosen to photograph all of our items in their current state to present the real original condition as completely as possible for transparency towards our clients.

In case you have any additional questions about the original condition, always feel free to reach out and ask us for additional images. We do also offer services such as restoration and re-upholstery in case this is wished for.
